What it costs per month, in round numbers
- Nursing home: about $8,365 a month for a semi-private room and $11,437 for a private room.
- Assisted living: $6,250 a month, which generally includes the room, meals and daily help. Ask which services cost extra.
- Adult day center: $95 a day; five days a week would be about $2,058 a month.
- Agency caregiver: about $3,293 a month for 20 hours a week and $6,587 for 40 hours.
Home care: an agency or hiring directly
Agencies charge more per hour because they are the employer: they pay taxes, insurance, supervision and replacements when the caregiver can’t come. If you hire directly, the benchmark wage in Arizona is $17.51 an hour (the median caregiver wage from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), May 2025); on top of that come employer taxes and, if they apply, overtime.
How Medicaid helps in Arizona
Medicaid is the main source of help with long-term care costs for people with limited income and assets. It pays for nursing home care in every state and, depending on the state, also for home care, adult day centers or the care portion of assisted living. In Arizona, Medicaid is called AHCCCS.
- Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS): AHCCCS coverage for older adults or people with disabilities who need a nursing home level of care; services can be provided in a nursing home, at home, or in assisted living (not including room and board). Official website
