State-licensed home care agencies

Agencies that send caregivers to the home to help with bathing, dressing, meals, medications and companionship, according to state licensing records.

What a home care agency does

A home care agency (also called personal care, companion or homemaker services, depending on the state) sends trained caregivers to the home by the hour, by shift or as live-in help. They help with everyday activities: bathing, dressing, eating, moving around safely, remembering medications, running errands and keeping company. It’s different from home health, which is medical care (nursing and therapy) ordered by a doctor.

Medicare usually doesn’t pay for this everyday care; many families pay privately, with long-term care insurance or, if they qualify, through state Medicaid programs. Estimate what it would cost and compare it with other options.

When you call, ask whether the caregivers are employees of the agency, whether they speak Spanish if your family needs it, how they cover absences and what the minimum number of hours per visit is.
