Home health agencies
Medicare-certified or state-licensed agencies that send nurses and therapists to the home when a doctor orders it. For everyday non-medical care (bathing, dressing, companionship), see home care agencies and our home care cost calculator.
Home health is not the same as a caregiver
Home health agencies provide medical services for a period of time: nursing and physical, occupational or speech therapy, ordered by a doctor. Medicare pays for them if the person can’t leave home without great effort (homebound) and needs intermittent skilled care.
Everyday non-medical care (help bathing, dressing, cooking, companionship) comes from home care agencies or caregivers hired directly, and Medicare doesn’t pay for it; Medicaid may, through state programs (for example, IHSS in California).
