- Adult Family Care: a family home where a caregiver looks after a few adults. It can be paid for with Medicaid.
- Adult Day Services: adult day centers where your loved one can spend the day in good company.

How Medicaid helps in Indiana
Medicaid pays for nursing home care for people who meet the medical and financial requirements.
For people 60 and older with Medicaid, there is Indiana PathWays for Aging. Each person who enrolls chooses a health plan and gets a care coordinator. PathWays includes a Medicaid waiver, which covers services outside a nursing home: help at home, adult day centers, Adult Family Care and Assisted Living in approved places. For people under 60, assisted living services are available through the Health and Wellness waiver.
In general, Medicaid pays for care services, but not for rent or meals at the residence. To get started, contact your Area Agency on Aging, which can guide you on the waiver, and the Division of Family Resources (DFR), which reviews the Medicaid application. For questions about PathWays, call 877-284-9294.

Tips for your family
- Check the license in the IDOH directory of Residential Care Facilities, which shows the license number and when it expires.
- Ask whether the place takes part in PathWays or the Health and Wellness waiver. Not every residence accepts Medicaid.
- Look at inspections on Medicare's Care Compare for nursing homes. They help you get to know the place and prepare questions for your visit.
- Ask for help early: the assessment and Medicaid paperwork can take time, so it's best to call your Area Agency on Aging before an emergency happens.
- Don't hesitate to ask for an interpreter when you call any agency, so you fully understand each step.
